oysters — With care during pregnancy
A note from Emily
Emily's honest take
Oh, mama, it's so important to be careful with what we eat while pregnant! The good news is that while you should absolutely avoid raw or undercooked oysters due to the risk of harmful bacteria like Listeria, Vibrio, and Toxoplasma gondii, thoroughly cooked oysters can be a safe and even nutritious part of your diet. When cooking them, make sure they become opaque and firm; if they are in the shell, cook until the shells open, discarding any that remain closed.

Oysters are actually a "best choice" for seafood, being low in mercury and offering great nutrients like protein, zinc, and omega-3s, which are wonderful for your baby's development. Just aim for 2-3 servings (8-12 ounces) of low-mercury seafood per week.

Always check with your OB for personalized advice, mama!
