sausage — With care during pregnancy

Emily's honest take
Oh, mama, I know those cravings can hit hard! You can generally enjoy sausage while pregnant, but the most important thing is to make sure it's cooked absolutely thoroughly. Fresh sausages, like breakfast links or Italian sausage, should be cooked until they are steaming hot all the way through, with no pink meat left and the juices running clear, to kill off any harmful bacteria like Listeria or Toxoplasma.

For ready-to-eat types, like hot dogs, frankfurters, or many deli-style sausages, it's advised to heat them until they are steaming hot throughout, too, even if they're pre-cooked, as they can also carry Listeria. And when it comes to cured or fermented sausages, such as salami, pepperoni, or chorizo, it's safest to only eat them if they've been cooked thoroughly, for example, on a hot pizza or in a pasta sauce. Just be mindful that sausage is often a processed meat, so it's best enjoyed as an occasional treat rather than an everyday item due to its salt and fat content. Also, avoid liver sausage due to high Vitamin A levels.
