a tuna melt — With care during pregnancy
A note from Emily
Emily's honest take
Mama, it's totally understandable to crave a tuna melt! The good news is that tuna can be part of a healthy pregnancy diet because it offers important nutrients like DHA for your baby's brain development. However, it's wise to be mindful of the type and quantity due to mercury levels.

Most guidelines recommend choosing **canned light tuna (skipjack)**, as it has lower mercury levels and is considered a "Best Choice". You can typically have up to 12 ounces (about 2-3 standard cans) of canned light tuna per week. If your tuna melt uses **canned white tuna (albacore)**, which has higher mercury, it's best to limit it to no more than 6 ounces (about one standard can) per week, and avoid other higher-mercury fish that week. The heating involved in making a tuna melt is also a positive, as canned tuna is cooked during canning and heating it further can reduce the risk of bacteria like Listeria in the tuna salad itself.
