While Salmonella typically won't harm your baby directly, it can cause severe symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration, which can be tough on you and potentially trigger preterm labor. E. coli infections can also lead to serious complications.

However, there's good news for your sweet tooth! Many store-bought "edible" cookie dough products are made specifically to be safe for raw consumption. These typically use heat-treated flour (which kills any potential E. coli) and pasteurized eggs (which eliminates Salmonella risk). So, if you're reaching for that, just be sure to check the label for "safe to eat raw" or similar wording. If you're making it at home, you can use pasteurized eggs and heat-treat your flour (for example, by baking it briefly) to make your own safe version.
