Mama, while liver is rich in nutrients like iron and folate, it contains very high levels of preformed vitamin A (retinol), which can be harmful to your baby in large amounts and may increase the risk of birth defects or miscarriage, especially in the first trimester.

Some guidelines, like the NHS and Finnish Food Authority, recommend avoiding liver entirely during pregnancy. Other sources suggest that if you do consume it, it should be in very small, infrequent portions, such as less than 50 grams (about 1.7 ounces) per week, and you should definitely steer clear of it in your first trimester. Always ensure any liver is thoroughly cooked to avoid foodborne illness.
