The NHS and other health organizations strongly advise against eating *all types of refrigerated pâté* (meat, fish, or even vegetable) because of the risk of Listeria bacteria, which can be harmful during pregnancy. Additionally, many pâtés contain liver, which is very high in Vitamin A (retinol), and too much Vitamin A can be harmful to a developing baby, especially in early pregnancy.

However, the FDA, ACOG, and FoodSafety.gov clarify that *canned or shelf-stable pâtés and meat spreads* that don't require refrigeration until opened are generally considered safe. This is because they've been processed at high temperatures to kill bacteria, making them safe until you open them and need to refrigerate.

So, the safest bet is to steer clear of any pâté from the deli or the refrigerated section. If you're really craving it, a shelf-stable, canned variety is a safer option, and it's best to consume it right after opening.
