In the United States, and generally where eggs are not pasteurized or don't carry specific safety marks, it's recommended to cook eggs until both the yolks and whites are firm to eliminate the risk of *Salmonella* bacteria. This means avoiding runny or undercooked eggs, including soft-boiled ones, unless they are pasteurized. Pasteurized eggs are heat-treated to kill bacteria, making them safer to eat even when lightly cooked or raw.

However, if you're in the UK, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and NHS advise that eggs with the British Lion quality mark can be safely eaten runny or raw, even by pregnant women. This is because British Lion eggs come from hens vaccinated against *Salmonella* and are produced under strict safety standards. If your eggs don't have this mark, it's best to cook them thoroughly until the yolks and whites are completely solid.
