However, because tuna can contain mercury, which can be harmful in large amounts, the type of tuna and how much you eat matters.
Generally, canned light tuna (often skipjack) is a "Best Choice" and you can typically have 2-3 servings, or about 8-12 ounces, per week. For canned white (albacore) tuna or fresh tuna steaks, which are higher in mercury, it's recommended to limit your intake to no more than one serving, around 4-6 ounces, per week. Species like Bigeye tuna should be avoided entirely due to their high mercury content. Always make sure your tuna is cooked thoroughly.
